Librarians in Print: Terry Huwe and Ginny Irving

Terry Huwe and Ginny Irving have published an article titled "U.C. librarian peer review: Another model for faculty self-governance". The article appears in California Public Employee Relations, no. 127 (December 1997). The article describes librarian peer review for a non-librarian readership. It also explores the relevance and applicability of this system to other professions, including both teaching faculty and professionals that work in non-university settings.

  Melvyl sessions and other training

A total of 48 people were present for two December Melvyl sessions for library employees sponsored by the Staff Development Committee (SDC). Many thanks to Margaret Phillips of the Teaching Library (TLIB) for teaching these sessions which described what's new in some familiar Melvyl databases and looked at features of Web Melvyl.

If you missed these sessions, or if you found that you need to learn more basic level techniques for navigating the wealth of Melvyl offerings, don't despair! Regularly scheduled Teaching Library instruction sessions for the public are also open to Library employees, and provide an excellent opportunity to improve search techniques. The classes on finding books and articles run from January 20 through April 24 and are held weekly. For more information about these classes, or other classes on navigating the WWW, contact the Teaching Library at 3-9959 or watch for their flyers and announcements.

One last request: if you feel you'd like some training in something that isn't being offered at this time, let the Staff Development Committee know and we'll direct your inquiry to the appropriate division of the Library (Library Human Resources Department [LHRD], TLIB) or see if we can sponsor the class.

Thanks,
- Charis Takaro

GSSI Updates: CQ gone; LBNL ERP added; Tax forms galore!

-------------CQ is leaving

Congressional Compass is here! CQ (Congressional Quarterly) is leaving. Last summer and fall the UC Government Information Librarians made a recommendation to change from CQ to Congressional Compass. Congressional Compass is a combination of an index/abstract (see the Congressional Masterfile CD-ROMs 1970-present currently on the Library PC Network) and fulltext.

The URL is: http://web.lexis-nexis.com/congcomp
[I believe there are a few problems with ip recognition, but these should be cleared up shortly].

-------------LBL ERP Collection in GSSI

Government and Social Science Information (GSSI) now has documents from the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's Environmental Restoration Program (ERP) available to help ensure that all interested parties have access to information about the Program. Information is provided about the effects of past Laboratory operations on the environment, results of ongoing technical investigations, and Berkeley Laboratory's plan to involve the community in the ERP.

The documents are available for consultation in GSSI, they do not circulate. See: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/GSSI/lbl.html for a list of titles. The documents are on a "short" shelf in front of the dramatic painting of "Washington Rallying the Troops at Monmouth."

---------------Tax Forms

Yes, it's that time again, and GSSI's first shipment of tax forms, from the IRS and the Franchise Tax Board, are here. Our "give away" forms are located in the copier alcove (east side). And the Library Photocopy Service is again making available the notebooks of reproducible forms for the public.

For those not wanting to make the trek to GSSI or the Photoopy Service, forms are available on the web, as well.

Only 3 months left to file!

Bancroft & UC Extension co-sponsor Daguerreotypist Program

Bancroft and UC Extension have announced a special program as part of Extension's Arts & Design/Photography offerings for the Spring 1998 term. Entitled "The Adventures of a Modern Dageurreotypist", the program features Robert Shlaer, the world's only full-time professional daguerreotypist. Shlaer will recount the history of the daguerreotype (a photographic process invented in 19th century France) will demonstrate how they are made, and will create an original daguerreotype including the program participants. He will also discuss his current artistic endeavor, re-creating a panorama of the landscape over which John Charles Fremont passed with his 1853-1854 expedition. The original of this massive work was lost in a fire.

The one-day program will be offered Saturday, May 9, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Dwinelle Hall. For further information about the program and fees, and to enroll, contact UC Extension at 2-4111. You may also read more about the class at: http://www.unex.berkeley.edu:4243/cat/arts12.html [it is the fifth class listed in the "Photography" section]
