December Library Stars

The Library Stars Programs is pleased to announce last month's Library Star recipients:

Penny Bertrang, in gratitude for her amazing knowledge, her patience, and her collegial diplomacy-and the countless times she's answered, explained, fixed and saved all of us.
Presented by Willyce Kim

Cristian Guerrero for his gentle nudges to push me to do things I never would have thought to try. For his excellent judgement and his unusual approach of looking at things. His encouragement has been a blessing and I'm very thankful to be able to call him a friend!
Presented by Madalene Rodriguez

Lupe Ochoa, whose dedication, hard work, and knowledge allow Technical Services to function. Because she plays such an important role in our work, Lupe has the unenviable status of being the most sought-after person in 250 Moffitt. Fortunately for us, she always has an open door and is willing to hear about an issue even if she's busy (which she always is). We can rest assured that Lupe will act on the issue or propose a thoughtful solution. Whether it's a matter of ordering supplies, getting books to their destination, or dealing with the current crisis, Lupe handles it all with calm, grace, and humor.
Presented by Michael Meacham

Mary Scott, who is always professional, patience, and a pleasure to work with even on a tight deadline. Mary finds a way to make the most difficult process, like web design, easier. One of her most endearing attributes is her wonderful sense of humor. She does wonderful work with a sense of levity and sharp wit. Thank you Mary for making these aspects of my job easier and more enjoyable.
Presented by Tim Dennis

Toni Walker, an outstanding member of the Course Reserve Team. She is dedicated to her work and she shares her enthusiasm with everyone she meets. Anyone from instructors to students to staff have felt her warm welcome as she handles the many requests that come across her desk. If only we all shared her exuberance.
Presented by Tom Raftery

Congratulations to all!

(art)ists@library Series Continues With Reception

The (art)ists@library series presents the work of Lora Graham and Rebecca Green. Their work will be on exhibit in the Morrison Library from January 12 through February 13, 2004.

Please join us in a potluck reception for the artists on Thursday January 15th from 4-6pm in the Morrison Library. Please bring hors d'oeuvres or something to drink (no red wine please).

Steve Mendoza and Alex Warren
(art)ists@library Co-coordinators

A brief autobiographical sketch of each artist follows:

  • Lora L. Graham, Head, Social Welfare Library
I've been drawing and painting for many years and have had the unique opportunity to display some of my work in the Social Welfare Library where I am its head.
I graduated from California State University, Hayward with a BA in Art and Art History. My main focus in those earlier years was drawing in pencil and ink, and etching, but in the early 1990's I turned to painting. I've always been interested in the human figure and its complexity and beauty, so much of my painting deals with this subject.
My ideas about "Art" revolve about the expression of love from ones hands and eyes and the communication of that to others.
  • Rebecca Green, Head, Collections Core Services Division
I grew up in the East Bay and developed my love of drawing early on. I earned a B.A., M.A., and M.F.A. in fine art from U.C. Berkeley. During both my undergraduate and graduate studies in Berkeley's Practice of Art Department I had the good fortune to study with Robert Hartman, Joan Brown and Elmer Bischoff. My oil paintings are done with a palette knife using a technique in which paint is applied directly from the can to the canvas. For the last ten years my art has moved from the graphic arena to the garden, but my interest in texture, shape and color has remained.

New Home for Earthquake Engineering Abstracts

BETHESDA, MD, December, 2003 -- Researchers investigating earthquake engineering and earthquake hazard mitigation will soon be able to access Earthquake Engineering Abstracts through the Internet Database Service (IDS) from CSA. The National Information Service for Earthquake Engineering (NISEE) at the University of California, Berkeley, has reached an agreement whereby the database will now be licensed to CSA and distributed through IDS.

“Earthquake Engineering Abstracts has found a terrific home on our IDS platform,” said Matt Dunie, president of CSA. “Researchers will be able to search it along with a number of other top engineering databases. And on IDS, the service will be upgraded with advantages including enhanced search options and powerful linking capabilities.”

The database will be offered through IDS at no charge through the end of January 2004. Researchers wishing to search Earthquake Engineering Abstracts, should go to INFO.CSA.COM earthquake for access to the database. Related databases available through IDS include ANTE: Abstracts in New Technologies and Engineering, CSA Civil Engineering Abstracts, Environmental Engineering Abstracts, and CSA Mechanical & Transportation Engineering Abstracts.

Earthquake Engineering Abstracts provides comprehensive authoritative coverage of relevant disciplines including engineering seismology, soil dynamics, structural dynamics, earthquake-resistant design and analysis, performance-based seismic engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, risk and reliability seismic engineering, and disaster planning. It contains more than 104,000 abstracts and citations of journal, conference and monographic literature published throughout the world since 1971, growing at a rate of more than 5,000 records a year.

Established in 1971 at the University of California, Berkeley, the National Information Service for Earthquake Engineering (NISEE) provides timely access to technical research and development information in earthquake engineering and related fields. NISEE is located at the Earthquake Engineering Research Center (EERC) on the Richmond Field Station. The NISEE project is partially sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of California, Berkeley and directed by a voluntary Advisory Committee comprised of representatives of the earthquake engineering community.

CSA, a Cambridge Information Group company, is a leading publisher of bibliographic databases and print journals used by more than 4,000 research institutions worldwide. CSA annually publishes more than 700,000 abstracts culled from more than 14,000 sources. Its award-winning Internet Database Service provides Web access to more than 100 bibliographic databases covering major areas of research including materials science, environmental sciences and pollution management, biological sciences, aquatic sciences and fisheries, biotechnology, engineering, computer science, sociology, information technology, art history, political science, and linguistics. As part of its licensing agreement, CSA will provide no-cost access to this database through the California Digital Library (CDL) beginning in 2004.
