Staff Development Recognition Awards

University Librarian Jerry Lowell presented Staff Development Committee Recognition Awards to three members of the Library staff for their outstanding contributions to the Library in 1998. The awards were presented at the annual Library Holiday Party on December 18. Both awardees and nominees were applauded for their outstanding contributions to the Library during the past year.

Tim Hoyer, Head of Technical Services at the Bancroft Library, received the Individual Award, and Cathy Scheiman and Asya Usvitsky of Technical Services received the Team Award.

Following is an excerpt from the nomination of Tim Hoyer by Terry Boom on behalf of the Bancroft Employee Recognition Award Committee:

Tim Hoyer is presently the Head of Bancroft Technical Services. He began his career in Bancroft in 1972 in the Catalog Division, eventually heading up its copy cataloging unit. In the 1980s, Tim was instrumental in projects to provide computer-based access to Library collections with the retrospective conversion of Bancroft's catalog of printed materials, including the special files which had long been a tradition of rare book cataloging.

Tim was one of the first to recognize the potential benefit of developing standards for web-based archival finding aids. At a national level, Tim has involved himself in the development of the Finding Aid Document Type Definition, and Encoded Archival Description standards.

Tim embraces the possibilities of the digital library. He has written grants which brought funding to enhance Berkeley's reputation in this area: the California Heritage project to digitize and mount 25,000 images; the Finding Aids Project to mount Bancroft's and other institutions' finding aids for manuscript and other collections on the web; and the project to inventory, catalog, and digitize the Robert B. Honeyman Western Americana Pictorial Collection; and Berkeley's portion of the Advanced Papyrological Information System project. He has also secured grand funds to create a finding aid for the San Francisco Call newspaper morgue negative collection.

Tim has a profound commitment to the mission of the Library, to make its collections available to as many people as possible. His tireless efforts in support of this goal have had a markedly benefited the Bancroft staff and patrons alike.

Excerpts from the nomination by Terry Boom on behalf of the Bancroft Employee Recognition Award Committee follow:

Cathy Scheimann and Asya Usvitsky, both of Technical Services, took charge of beta testing two Tandem Terminal emulation candidates for performing GLADIS Maintenance in the Windows 95 environment. After thorough testing and comparison, they authoritatively demonstrated that Win6530 was the superior candidate.

Then, Cathy and Asya created a customized-for-GLADIS-Maintenance version Win6530, complete with shortcuts and macros, produced support documentation, installed it on all Windows 95 computers in Technical Services and other units, and provided one-on-one training in the new GLADIS Maintenance environment.

These feats were accomplished in addition their regular duties, and required a great deal of planning, and the expenditure of much time and energy. Cathy and Asya have performed an incredibly valuable service for the Library, and they deserve recognition for their foresight, initiative, and creativity.

As Jerry Lowell stated in his awards presentation, the competition for this year's SDC Recognition Awards was fierce, and all of this year's staff nominations deserve note. Nominators were urged to refine and resubmit their nominations next year.

Community Leader Robert Bridges Presented with Oral History at 68th Class Reunion

At the 68th Reunion of the Class of 1930 ( November 20, 1998), Robert L. Bridges, class president, was presented with his oral history, "Sixty Years of Legal Advice to International Construction Firms, Thelen, Marrin, Johnson and Bridges, 1933-1997."

Robert Bridges' oral history was the 14th in the Regional Oral History Office's series, "University of California, Source of Community Leaders," funded by the Class of 1931 Endowment. Mr. Bridges was an ideal interviewee for this series documenting illustrious Cal alumni. With a BA (1930) and JD (1933) from UC Berkeley, he was hired by Paul Marrin and Max Thelen, Sr., to work in their San Francisco law firm. He began advising members of the Six Companies Group (heavy construction companies) on tax matters in the thirties. When that group broke up, Mr. Bridges advised individual construction firms, most notably Bechtel, and became a partner in the law firm.

In addition to his legal career, Robert Bridges has served on many boards of directors and donated time and funds to the University of California in many capacities. He continues to serve as adviser to the Center for Latin American Studies on the Berkeley campus, for which the Class of 1930 endowed a chair as their fiftieth anniversary gift.

The presentation was made by Ann Flinn, chair of the Friends of The Bancroft Library, who spoke about Bob Bridges' generous service to the university. She introduced Lois Swabel, president of the Class of 1931; Germaine LaBerge, the interviewer; and Ann Lage, principal editor at ROHO. Chancellor Robert Berdahl and the Cal Straw Hat Band participated in the reunion celebration.
