The Passing of Betty Mew

We are sad to inform you that Betty Mew of Library Business Services/Library Human Resources passed away in Summit Hospital on January 2, 2006 after a brief illness. Betty joined the Library as a Payroll Assistant in LBS in September of 1989, and has worked here since. She was promoted to Payroll Supervisor in 1998 and was responsible for the timely and accurate payroll for almost 800 student employees and hourly staff employees in the Kronos automated timekeeping system.

She is survived by her beloved daughter Jessica, age 17, of Alameda, her father, Henry Eng, also of Alameda, and her three brothers.

A year and a half ago Betty and her daughter made a big trip to London and Paris, and recently Betty took up knitting and had just finished her first baby sweater. Just before the holiday closure she was in all day training sessions in preparation for the upcoming Kronos upgrade.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 8th at 2:00pm at the Albert Brown Mortuary, 3476 Piedmont Ave, Oakland, CA 94611. The family would like friends and colleagues to speak about Betty at the service.

The family asks that flowers not be red or white; Betty's favorites were yellow roses and purple irises.

We her colleagues will miss her deeply and ask everyone in the Library who knew her to join us in fond remembrance.

Retirement Wishes for Mark Mentges

Mark Mentges will be retiring from the Education-Psychology Library on January 6, 2006.

Mark started work at the Education-Psychology Library in January of 1979 as assistant head of circulation. Within a short time Mark became head of Circulation at Ed-Psych. Mark received his MLIS degree from the UCB School of Library and Information Science in 1982.

During his career Mark worked on many task forces, committees and projects. He chaired the Circulation Supervisors Group, and then the Circulation Committee. He also worked the Staff Development Committee, Technical Services (Council), and the Public Services Advisory Group. During 1983-1984 Mark served as assistant to AUL Rita Kane. He was also one of the founding members of Current Cites in 1990.

Mark worked at the Business and Economics Library in the late 1980's and early 1990's as a reference librarian. After the retirement of Sonya Kaufman from the Education-Psychology Library Mark returned here full time in 1993 to become Reference and Instruction Coordinator.

Mark, his life-partner, and Scooter the cat plan to move to San Diego this coming year. They will continue traveling and also continue their "international cat-sitting" jobs in Zurich and Nice.

Those of you who worked closely with Mark over his career are invited to join us at a goodbye celebration for him at the Men's Faculty Club on Friday, January 6th, 4-6pm.

We at Ed-Psych will miss him mightily--for his work of course, but also for his humor, his gracious good nature and kindness, and his sharing of travel adventures and advice. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement.
