Authors of UCB dissertations are required to submit two copies to the UC Berkeley Graduate Division. An archival copy is deposited in the Doe Library and can be requested at the Doe Circulation Desk. The dissertation will be paged by library staff (taking approximately fifteen minutes), and may only be used within the Library with a government issued photo ID. Some dissertations are shelved off campus at the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) and can be requested through OskiCat or at the Doe Circulation Desk. Normally these requests will be filled the next business day after 4pm. Photocopiers are available in various locations throughout the Library.
To browse for titles that have been published in the History of Art Department, search Melvyl by subject Dissertations, Academic UCB History of Art. Individual dissertations may also be searched in Oskicat by author or title. Note that recently published dissertations may be waiting to be cataloged. If you don’t find a recent title, check with the History of Art Department.
The Graduate Division sends a copy directly to University Microfilms (UMI) located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This company sells print or microform full text copies for over one million dissertations at http://proquest.umi.com/login. Note that authors can opt not to allow for the purchase of full text. To search for titles owned by UMI, search the database Dissertations and Theses (Dissertation Abstracts). It includes citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester; those published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts, written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. The database represents the work of authors from over 1,000 North American graduate schools and European universities. Access Dissertations and Theses via the Library homepage (www.lib.berkeley.edu) under Find Information/Electronic Resources/By Types/ Dissertation and Theses Databases.
Dissertations & Theses @ University of California gives UC Berkeley patrons full text access to nearly all dissertations filed from 1996 to the present for all UC campuses. Note that authors can opt not to publish in full text. Access via the Library homepage under: Find Information/Electronic Resources/By Types/ Dissertation and Theses Databases.
Periodical Indexes The following online periodical indexes include dissertations in their source coverage.
ARTbibliographies Modern. An excellent resource for art history, art criticism, art theory, design, photography, graphic art. The database has abstracts of journal articles, books, essays, exhibition catalogs, and exhibition reviews. Dissertations are included and reflect about 1% of the entire database. Scope extends from artists and movements beginning with Impressionism in the late 19th century, up to the most recent works and trends in the late 20th century. Photography is covered from its invention in 1839 to the present. A particular emphasis is placed upon adding new and lesser-known artists and on the coverage of foreign-language literature. Approximately 13,000 new entries are added each year. Covers all aspects of modern and contemporary art, including performance art and installation works, video art, computer and electronic art, body art, graffiti, artists' books, theater arts, crafts, jewelry, illustration, and more, as well as the traditional fine arts of painting, printmaking, sculpture, and drawing. The database covers 1974 to the present. Access via the Library Homepage under Find Information/ElectronicResources/By Types/Article Databases.
Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA). The most comprehensive art history periodical index available. It includes abstracted articles from 2,500 international periodicals, books, conference proceedings, collected essays, exhibition and art dealer's catalogs and published dissertations. BHA's half-million records cover the art of Europe and the Americas from late antiquity to the modern period in a wide range of media, including architecture and industrial design, painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, decorative and applied arts, and popular and folk art. Strong indexing in such areas as art historiography, archaeological and antiquarian literature, area and cultural studies, critical theory, as well as professional literature in art librarianship and visual resources curatorship, make it an especially rich resource. Access via the Library Homepage under Find Information/ElectronicResources/By Types/Article Databases.
Francis. Produced by the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST), this database contains records from more than 3,000 journals, books, dissertations, conference papers and other American and European sources covering humanities, social sciences, and economics. Most citations, abstracts, and subject headings are in French, with about 33% in English. International in scope, it is strong in religion, the history of art, and literature—with particular emphasis on current trends in European and world literature. Coverage includes 1984 to the present. Access via the Library Homepage under Find Information/ElectronicResources/By Types/Article Databases.
