Access Policy

The Art History/Classics Library was established to house the core collections that relate most closely to the upper division graduate classes that are taught in the seminar rooms within the Library. Although much of the collection is non-circulating, the loan period for circulating materials is two hours. The majority of the circulating fine arts and classics-related collections are housed in the Gardner Stacks, Doe Library.  When special approval for access is necessary, patrons should apply in writing or in person to the Head Librarian, AH/C Library.

Regular Onsite access with circulation privileges are automatically extended to the following.  Patrons must have current academic affiliation and a UCB Library borrower’s card in good standing.

    • UC graduate students and faculty
    • UC staff
    • Spouse or domestic partner of a full-time University of California employee
    • Graduate students, faculty, and museum personnel working at institutions that are members of the Research Libraries Group
    • National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellows
    • Visiting scholars who have formal UCB departmental sponsorship

Special Regular Onsite access may be provided to the following.  Circulation privileges must be approved by the Head Librarian.

    • Museum librarians and curators of Bay Area institutions
    • Staff of non-profit museums and galleries in the Bay Area
    • Independent researchers with valid UCB privileges
    • Faculty and graduate students from other academic institutions with a letter of sponsorship from UCB faculty in History of Art or Classics Departments
    • Undergraduates with faculty sponsorship
    • UC Extension Concurrent Enrollment Students enrolled in either a History of Art or Classics graduate course
