Connecting from Off Campus

Anyone may freely access the library catalogs, OskiCat and Melvyl, and most of the Library's web pages, from any computer with an Internet connection.

Some licensed electronic resources, such as journal article databases, are commercial products with access restrictions. Your affiliation with UC Berkeley determines what resources you may access from off campus, as described below.

Current UC Berkeley Students, Faculty, and Staff

You may access any material on our site, including licensed resources.

  • If you connect to the Internet through the UC Berkeley network (in a campus office, dorm, etc.), you should be able to access all library resources.
  • If you are off campus, and connect to the Internet through the Berkeley VPN (Virtual Private Network) services, you should also have full access to library resources.
  • If you are off campus, and connect to the Internet through a commercial Internet Service Provider, you can get full access to library resources by using our Proxy Server Service. After you set your web browser to use this service, it lets you log on as a UC Berkeley student or employee. We recommend getting a CalNet ID and using it for this purpose.
  • Please read the proxy server setup instructions carefully. If you connect to the Internet through your company's or ISP's firewall, or use an older web browser, you may not be able to use the proxy service. There are also several known service problems for those using AOL, some versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Macintosh computers.

Other Library Users

Most of the electronic resources are available to you at public computers in the Anthropology Library. If you are not a current UC Berkeley student, faculty or staff member, most of the licensed resources are not available to you from off campus.
