"This massive effort was a response to the astonishing growth in the past 20 years of the number of students interested in anthropology, the number of anthropology departments, the size of the departments, and the number of institutions offering instruction in anthropology. Quite plainly, the magnitude of the increase created problems of a new order, and the Department of Anthropology at the Unversity of California, Berkeley, initiated an Educational Resources in Anthropology program to examine the situation and its implications for the future."
