"In 1898 Kroeber received a fellowship in anthropology from Columbia, and Boas sent him the next summer to do field work with the Arapaho Indians in Wyoming... the Spring of 1901 was spent in writing up his doctoral dissertation, later published in the American Anthropologist under the title 'Decorative Symbolism of the Arapaho.' "
