"From his first fieldwork, Bascom collected African art with great enthusiasm and taste, soon being recognized as an authority and the owner of an important collection. He published the catalogue of an exhibition at the Milwaukee Public Museum with collector/missionary Paul Gebauer in 1953, a catalogue of his memorable Lowie show entitled simply African Arts in 1967, plus an introduction to the catalogue of the Jay C. Leff Collection in 1969."
