In 1994, Berkeley paleoaanthropologist Tim White and his research team discovered hominid fossils in Ethiopia that are 1.2 million years older than Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis). Named Ardpithecus ramidus, these fossils bring us closer to a portrait of the common ancestor between the great apes and humans.
